Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V in India? Sputnik V vs Sputnik Light

Sputnik V, a Covid-19 vector vaccine is one of the two varieties of Sputnik vaccines that is available in India. Read the indications and comparison of Sputnik V with Covishield, Covaxin, and Sputnik Light are listed below in this article.

Storing vaccines proven to be of major concern.

Sputnik V can be stored in liquid form at -18.5 degrees Celsius and dry form can be stored at 2-8 degrees Celsius. Handling the dry form of the Sputnik V vaccine is easier for the health care facilities throughout India.

Sputnik V vaccine:

Sputnik V has come into popularity when it becomes world’s first registered Covid-19 vaccine.

Sputnik V vaccine is a Russian vaccine manufactured by The Russian Ministry of Health, the Gamaleya National Research Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology, and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund).

Type of Vaccine Recombinant viral-vector vaccine
Dose0.5 ml each
Schedule  90 days apart
Vaccination during Pregnancy      Not recommended
Vaccination >18 years of age  Recommended
Vaccination to Lactating mother        Not recommended
Storage and transportation                +2 C to +8 degree C (Dry form)
-18.5 degree C (Liquid form)

On April 12th, 2021, Sputnik V got emergency authorization for use in India. On May 1st, 2021, sputnik V is received in Hyderabad, India.

The other vaccine – Sputnik Light, one dose COVID-19 vaccine, has received authorization to be used in Russia.

The vaccine is named after the first Soviet space satellite, Sputnik-1 which was launched in 1957.

It is based on viral vector technology. The volume of Sputnik V vaccine production in India will be slowly rising.

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Russian investigators Extracted a fragment of genetic material from the novel coronavirus SARS-COV-2, which codes information about the structure of this spike S-protein, which is responsible for attachment of virus to human cells. They added it into a familiar adenovirus vector for shipping into a human cell making the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine.

Sputnik V Vaccine Ingredients

The Active components are a modified replication-defective adenovirus of another serotype (Serotype 26 for the first component and serotype 5 to the second), altered to incorporate the protein S-expressing receptor of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Other components are:

  • EDTA dihydrate,
  • Polysorbate 80,
  • Ethanol, and
  • Water.

Sputnik V Vaccine Indication:

  1. Sputnik V is eligible for all individuals >18years of age.
  2. Immunocompetent individuals can effectively take the Sputnik V vaccine.
  3. People who are in immunosuppressive therapy may produce a weak immune response. It Is unknown whether people with impaired immune responsiveness, such as people receiving immunosuppressant therapy, will elicit the same response as immunocompetent people to the vaccine program. Immuno-compromised individuals might have a relatively weaker immune response to the vaccine program.
  4. Individuals with thrombocytopenia may take the Sputnik V vaccine cautiously and should be under medical supervision. Sputnik V should be given with care to individuals with thrombocytopenia, any coagulation disorder, or persons on anticoagulation therapy because bleeding or bruising may occur following an intramuscular administration in these people.

Sputnik V Contraindication:

  1. Pregnant female: There Is restricted experience with Sputnik V vaccinations in pregnant women, therefore it ought to be avoided.
  2. Lactating mothers: It’s unknown whether Sputnik V is excreted in human milk. It should be avoided.
  3. Pediatric age group: It is still under study.

NOTE: On April 14, 2021, the Russian Gamaleya Center declared, ‘A comprehensive evaluation of adverse events during clinical trials and over the duration of mass vaccinations using the Sputnik V vaccine’ revealed no cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Sputnik V is the world’s first registered vaccine, according to a well-studied human adenoviral vector-based platform. Sputnik V is already enrolled in over 65 nations.

Sputnik V is offered in a lyophilized (dry) form of this vaccine that significantly facilitates the logistics of its supply in global markets because of simplified requirements for its storage temperature (+ 2 – 8 degrees Celsius).

The vaccine could be kept at a temperature of +2 to +8 degrees Celsius, allowing for easy supply worldwide, such as hard-to-reach regions.

Sputnik Light Vaccine:

Sputnik Light is the primary component (recombinant human Adenovirus serotype number 26 (rAd26) of Sputnik V — the world’s first documented embryo against coronavirus.

The single-dose Sputnik Light vaccine shown 79.4percent. An efficacy level of almost 80 percent is greater than that of many two-dose vaccines. Sputnik Light has proven successful against all new breeds of coronavirus, according to the Gamaleya Center during laboratory tests.

Adverse event or Side effects:

No severe adverse events were registered after vaccination using Sputnik Light.

Both dose Sputnik V vaccine Remains the main vaccination tool.

Safety and efficacy

No such serious adverse reaction is seen by both of vaccines.

On April 14, 2021, the Russian Gamaleya Center declared, ‘A comprehensive evaluation of adverse events during clinical trials and over the duration of mass vaccinations using the Sputnik V vaccine’ revealed no cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Head of Gamaleya center Alexander Gintsburg claimed that Sputnik V is effective against all variants of Covid-19 i.e., from alpha variant to Delta variant.

Both the vaccine Sputnik V and Sputnik light has shown around 80% efficacy against SARS CoV-2. Though some studies have shown the efficacy of Sputnik V as 91.6%.
